What are Subject Matter Experts (SMEs)?

A Subject Matter Expert (SME) is an individual who exhibits the highest level of expertise in performing a specific job, task or skill.  A SME will have bona fide in-depth knowledge and expertise about a particular job or area of work.

Who are CAPPA SMEs?

SMEs are CAPPA members who are experienced professionals who contribute their expertise to the Association in a variety of ways.

How do SMEs support the work of CAPPA?

SMEs contribute in a variety of ways, such as:

  1. Answering ad hoc questions in their specific areas of expertise
  2. Write content, such as material for the CAPPA certificate in production accounting curriculum
  3. Provide updates to our curriculum
  4. Provide summaries of important industry updates/changes for our members
  5. Participate on relevant industry committees

Do SMEs participate in all areas listed above?

SMEs will pick and choose how they wish to be involved.

What is the time commitment for SMEs?

Corresponding to the above list:

  1. As needed
  2. 1 – 2x per year. Time dependent on amount of content needed.
  3. 1 – 2x per year. Time dependent on amount of content needed.
  4. As needed.
  5. Variable

Is the work of SMEs volunteer or paid?

Both.  Corresponding to the list above:

What is the requirement to be a CAPPA SME?

  1. CAPPA Member, and
  2. Minimum 10 year’s PA or Industry experience, and
  3. Minimum 5 year’s subject area experience, and
  4. Resume provided, and
  5. 2 Industry references specific to subject matter area provided.

Can a CAPPA SME also become an Instructor?

Yes, there may be opportunities for SMEs to facilitate a CAPPA Seminar or Module in our Certificate Program.

Are their restrictions to the role of SME?

The SME may not represent CAPPA to media, government or other public capacity without the express written permission from CAPPA’s CEO.

What is the process to become a CAPPA SME?

  1. Application with an email expressing interest (to a Specific Advertised Call for Subject Matter Experts)
  2. Interview (telephone chat regarding experience, our need, participation, commitment, answer questions)
  3. Reference check may be done
