At this time, we have moved our CPD Luncheons to the U of C downtown campus at the corner of 8th St SW and 8th Ave SW.   With the current economic environment and corresponding lower member attendance we have needed to secure a more cost efficient venue.  The U of C downtown campus has very nice luncheon meeting space and catering allowing us to avoid increasing participant fees.  The location is also just steps away from the LRT stations.  Join us for great presentations, an opportunity to connect with colleagues and a superb meal.

Presentation Description:

The recent Paris conference on climate change brought the important issue of global warming to the forefront.  The public is overwhelmed with media hype, and social networks are alive with heated debates on the topic.  Our Provincial and Federal governments are currently making big strategic and financial commitments in connection with climate change, so it is vitally important for the public and politicians—and us as geoscientists—to have the correct information to discuss the issue with our colleagues, families and friends, and help to properly guide the decision making process.

Climate change advocates vehemently believe that humans are causing global warming—and that this will lead to catastrophic global consequences.  On the other hand, climate change skeptics state exactly the opposite.  Who are we to believe?  At the very least, it is wise and proper to gather and evaluate the scientific publications on climate change, and to make an unbiased scientific evaluation of the data and information.

Has the climate changed in the past?  Are global temperatures increasing at a rapid rate?  Are man-made CO2 levels increasing?  Is this causing global warming?  Is there an unprecedented increase in global sea level rise, polar ice cap melting, and glacial recession?   We can answer all these questions in a logical, scientific, unemotional fashion.
