Certificate Program
The CAPPA certificate program consists of five courses. Each course is made up of up to 15 modules and lasts 45 hours in duration. A mid-term and a final exam are held for each course, except Level 5 which does not have a mid-term exam. A CAPPA certificate is issued to students upon successful completion of all five courses with a minimum of 70% in each course.
The five courses in the CAPPA certificate program are:
- Introduction to the Oilpatch
- Oil Production Accounting
- Gas Production Accounting
- Advanced Production Accounting
- A Case Study
The CAPPA Certificate Program is currently offered through several education institutions at several locations:
- Academy of Learning, Edmonton, AB
- Grande Prairie Regional College (GPRC), Grande Prairie, AB
- Lakeland College, Lloydminster, AB
- Medicine Hat Community College, Medicine Hat, AB
- Mount Royal College (MRC), Calgary, AB
- Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT), Edmonton, AB
- South East Regional College (Sask.), Weyburn and/or Estevan, SK
- Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), Calgary, AB
The courses run each Fall starting in late August and each Winter starting in January. Evening classroom courses typically run twice a week (Mon & Wed or Tue & Thurs). 'Saturdays only' classroom courses are available at SAIT. An accelerated Level 1 ? Introduction to the Oilpatch daytime course (Lectures start on a Monday and finish on Friday) is periodically offered at MRC.
SAIT and MRC offer the five core courses each semester at their Calgary campuses. For the other institutions, courses are run on a 'as demand warrants' basis. Only select courses may be offered per semester at these other locations.

A challenge exam is available for those wishing exemption for the first course. Arrangements to write this exam can be made by contacting the education institutions.

Seminars & Tours
CAPPA runs a number of seminars & tours throughout the year on various topic items. The seminars include:
- Gas Royalties Workshops

- Well and Facility Activity Statement Workshop

Each seminar is normally one day in duration. Upcoming seminars are listed on the CAPPA Calendar. All seminars are held at the MRC Downtown Campus. Contact Mount Royal College at 440-3833 for a schedule and to register.
CAPPA hosts Wellsite Tours at the SAIT Wellsite Production Education Centre in the spring and fall of each year. This is an excellent opportunity for people to see real oilfield equipment with a very knowledgeable guide. This tour is normally a half-day activity. Contact SAIT at 210-4383 for a schedule and to register.
Specific dates for these seminars/tours are set several months in advance and are published in CAPPA's calendar, the CAPP newsletter and the Daily Oil Bulletin.
SAIT Program Update
Production Accounting Full Time Day Program
The CAPPA full time day program is currently underway. This is an excellent program that maintains a 90% plus hiring rate. The success of this program is due to the high standards maintained in student selection, completion of the five CAPPA courses plus additional material taken in the program such as soft skills, financial accounting, software training and a three-month practicum in industry. SAIT will begin looking for host companies in February for student practicum placements that start in May. Team leaders/supervisors and managers in industry should consider taking part in this great opportunity. Natural Gas Marketing (MKTG-204)
This course is excellent for those who want to pursue a natural gas marketing career; are in production accounting or other areas of the oil industry; and, would benefit from a better understanding of natural gas marketing in order to perform their day-to-day job. This will give you a basic understanding of the natural gas market dynamics, introduce you to the major players and explain the market structure. Other topics covered include contracting, pricing, supply/demand, regulatory issues, pipelines, marketing choices and current events. All materials included. To register call 284-SAIT (7248).
Mount Royal College CAPPA Seminars
Gas Plant Allocation
Gain knowledge through discussions and examples of the data and calculation requirements for accurate gas plant volumetric allocations. Explore prerequisites for calculating gas and gas liquids allocations, understanding product flow, measurement and balancing, gas equivalent factors of gas liquids calculations, recombined composition calculations and stream average heating value calculations. Explore three common allocation methods and discuss current industry allocation issues.
Note: Students are required to bring a calculator to the seminar
Allowable Costs
Gain a deeper comprehension of allowable Cost fundamentals through hands-on examples of cost calculations including operating costs, capital costs and custom processing fees.
Saskatchewan Production Reporting & Royalties
Review workplace examples of production reporting and royalty calculations for the province of Saskatchewan.
